Frequently Asked Questions

What is the role of a GT Coach?

Gifted and Talented Coaches partner collaboratively with administrators, instructional coaches and teachers to plan/implement exciting and challenging activities designed to enrich higher learning opportunities.

Gifted and talented students will find that lessons, projects, and activities are interesting, in-depth, and tailored to their individual learning styles and needs. We utilize teaching practices that research proves works, not only with gifted learners, but with all students. Gifted/Talented (GT) Coaches work with advanced students, whether the entire class, small flexible groups, or individually. Our coaches partner in collaboration with administrators, instructional coaches and teachers to plan lessons and activities that support the grade-level curriculum.

GT coaches work closely with the classroom teachers, Master and Mentor teachers and other staff to provide numerous resources and a variety of strategies to differentiate instruction for advanced learners. The delivery model is fluid and flexible in nature to support varying levels of giftedness and student interests.

What opportunities are available for advanced learners?

Students will have opportunities for advanced learning. Throughout the content areas, students who demonstrate a thorough understanding of the material will have the chance to engage in meaningful, challenging learning. This learning may come in the form of flexible grouping, curriculum compacting, tiered assignments, cluster grouping, acceleration, or enrichment activities.

We work closely with classroom teachers to provide exciting and challenging activities designed to enrich learning opportunities in the classroom. GT Coaches provide support for classroom teachers with a variety of strategies to differentiate the learning of advanced students.

How does the GT Coach work with my child’s classroom teacher?

Our program supports teachers with the difficult task of differentiating instruction for advanced learners. Teachers have the support of the GT Coach, someone specifically available to share the workload of designing, collecting materials for, and implementing lessons for our advanced students.

How does this affect my advanced learner?

This delivery model is fluid and flexible in nature. Varying levels of giftedness, prior knowledge in a subject, and student interest differ for each child. Flexible grouping allows us to meet the needs of students as their strengths are identified. Advanced assignments may be structured differently to meet the needs of individuals and small groups.

What is differentiated instruction?

Differentiated instruction includes effective utilization of interpretive data and reflective analysis to support changes in the pace, level, or kind of instruction in response to the learner’s needs, learning styles, or interests.

Meaningful, higher ordered learning opportunities may come in the form of flexible grouping, tiered assignments, cluster grouping, acceleration, project-based learning, and through small group, partner and/or individual activities.

GT Coaches emphasize creating and maintaining stimulating classroom environments with academic rigor for our advanced and gifted learners. We work collaboratively with administrators and classroom teachers to create and share resources designed specifically for advanced learners. Knox County Schools is committed to providing opportunities to nurture, challenge, and develop the potential of high ability students.

Please contact the GT coach at your child’s school or Daphne Odom, GT Supervisor (594-1731) to help answer any questions you may have about the opportunities available for your child.

The Gifted/Talented Coaching Department is eager to share the many resources our GT Coaches have to offer students and classroom teachers. We have been hard at work creating resources and activities to help support classroom teachers meet the needs of our advanced learners.  An emphasis is placed on student products and maintaining stimulating classroom environments with academic rigor for our advanced and gifted learners.

When a gifted student whose intellectual ability and potential for achievement are so outstanding that their needs cannot be met in general education with accommodations met through the combined efforts of general education (enrichment, compacting, acceleration, grouping, independent study, advanced classes, supplemental learning materials, co-teaching, differentiated instruction), the student may receive special education services through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) in order to ensure Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).

Classroom teachers, Gifted and Talented Coaches, the Gifted and Talented Supervisor, Curriculum and Instruction Coaches, and department supervisors work closely to plan appropriate instruction for students as needed. Knox County Schools is committed to providing opportunities to nurture, challenge, and develop the potential of high ability students.

Our Vision:
The vision of the Gifted and Talented (GT) Department is two-fold. Our responsibility to students is to foster an environment that cultivates insatiable thinkers who persevere in solving problems critically and creatively within our global community. Our responsibility to teachers is to give them the capacity to develop and implement innovative, research-based teaching strategies for high ability learners through professional development, model lessons, and co-teaching.

Our Mission:
The mission of the gifted and talented department is to support teachers  in their efforts to meet the needs of advanced learners through intellectual challenges and opportunities. We will accomplish this mission through partnerships  with teachers, students, their families and communities.

WordMasters
The Gifted and Talented Department sponsors the optional WordMasters competitions for our elementary schools. The WordMasters Challenge is a fun and mind-stretching classroom competition for Language Arts students in grades 3-5. WordMasters encourages growth in vocabulary and verbal reasoning. Over 4,200 school teams, from 50 states, participated last year.

WordMasters addresses higher-level word comprehension and logical abilities and helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. It challenges students to solve analogies based on relationships among words they have learned. These analogies are drawn from special vocabulary lists, which students are provided before each challenge.

Please contact the GT Coach at your child's school if you have any other questions about WordMasters and also to see if your school participates.
